Quadre to study at Florida university
Teenage tennis sensation, Oyinlomo Quadre, has gained admission into the Florida International University in the United States of America, The PUNCH reports.
Quadre confirmed the news with a post beneath a tweet from The Nigerian Tennis Live.
The tweet, however, did not reveal what she will be studying at the Florida International University.
The 19-year-old, who has a career-high ranking of 92 in 2020, will continue with her education as well as further her tennis career at the school.
“Nigeria’s superstar tennis player, Oyinlomo Quadre, is now a student of Florida International University in the United States of America where she’ll play College Tennis and continue with her studies. She’s been in the US since the start of 2023.”
Speaking on her biggest challenge playing tennis in Nigeria, Quadre said, “As a tennis player in Nigeria, I think tennis is underrated and it is hard to get sponsorships.
“So, I think the federation should work towards getting sponsorships, so that there can be more tournaments for players to develop themselves.
“A lot of players in Nigeria only wait for the Central Bank of Nigeria tournament, and after that, they just hang their rackets till the following year.
“Another thing is I do not think tennis players are celebrated in Nigeria; there is no recognition unlike some other sports. If the federation can work on these, I think it would be a good starting point.”
Quadre has represented Nigeria at different international tournaments, including the Billie Jean King Cup, where she made her debut in 2021.
Her performance at the 2015 ITF/CAT Junior Championship in Morocco made her one of Africa’s best junior tennis players and secured a scholarship to the High-Performance Centre in Morocco.he Federal Road Safety Corps has warned campaign convoy drivers to avoid speeding and reckless driving as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the general elections.
The corps also urged the drivers to drive in conformity with established road traffic regulations to avoid road traffic crashes.
The PUNCH reports that in December 2022, four people were reportedly killed in an accident involving a Toyota Hilux transporting a detachment of vigilantes accompanying Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, on his way to Mubi for a campaign engagement.
Also in July 2022, four members of the New Nigeria Political Party in Niger State died following their involvement in an accident. It was reported that they travelled in an NNPP-branded vehicle that ran into a stationary truck between Lambata and Lapai in Niger State.
The Corps Marshal, Dada Biu, was reacting to the series of crashes that have occurred since the commencement of the campaigns involving political party convoys.
In a statement signed by the corps spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, on Tuesday, Biu regretted that the drivers still violate established laws despite repeated warnings and appeals from the corps.
“Dauda Biu registered his dissatisfaction while stating that despite repeated warnings, cautions and appeals that the Corps has made to these drivers, they still violate established laws, drive against the speed limit and engage in reckless driving,” the statement read.
behaviours that are in total contradiction to best road use practice,” the statement read.
Biu added that the Corps is determined to entrench ease of movement and safety for vehicular and human traffic as commanding officers have been directed to enhance the visibility of patrol teams in identified strategic locations.
Part of the efforts the Corps has put in place include the deployment of more operational vehicles and manpower to combat envisioned traffic gridlocks that would be occasioned by a series of political activities geared towards the oncoming general elections.
