
Onaiyekan urges tribunal to uphold fairness
The Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan have advised the Election Petition Tribunal to restore hope of the masses, by ensuring transparency and fairness on petitions before the court.
He made the call in Abuja on the occasion of this year World Communication day with the theme: Speaking from the heart, The truth in Love.
Cardinal Onaiyekan who said Nigerians have played their roles during the just concluded General Elections that metaphosis to this ongoing Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, called on Nigerians to remain calm and hopeful on the Judiciary.
The Clergyman also lauded the important roles Media have been playing towards fielding Citizens with timely information and urged them to sustain objective reportage.
“As Journalists, you do your job, cover everything, but try and listen to everybody and relay it to the public what is happening because they want to see every fact.” He advised
The Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja Diocese said although Court is the last hope of a common man, and became necessary for the Judiciary to prove this to masses who can’t not enter the Court to express their ordeal during the last Elections.
National Director of Social Communications, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Michael Umoh, said that the Church is an extension of the mission of Christ, adding that such is the reason it is necessary for communication.
Pope Paul VI was in 1967 established the World Communication day Celebration as an annual event, during which Catholic all over the world reflect on a theme which focuses on Media and Communication.
