
NJC condemns non-payment of State Judges’ retirement benefits
The National Judicial Council, NJC has decried the non-payment of retirement benefits, including severance pay, gratuity and pensions of Judicial Officers in some States.
In a statement by the Director, Information, Soji Oye, said the call was made at the Council’s 100th Meeting held on Thursday, under the Chairmanship of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The Council condemned in very strong terms the act, which it said is undermining the Rule of Law and Section 6 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.
The National Judicial Council therefore called on the offending States to ensure that all entitlement of retired Judges are fully settled forthwith.
It also directed State Chief Judges to file reports on compliance, to reach the Council not later than 1st of April 2023.
