Martins hails son on first pro deal
Retired Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has congratulated son Kevin after he signed his first professional contract at Italian Serie A club Monza, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Martins, 38, made his name playing in Italy, and his son is set to follow in his path.
The 42-cap Eagles star had an excellent career during his time in the topflight league in Italy, where he won the Serie A title, the Italian Cup (twice), and the Italian Super Cup, all with Inter Milan.
He then played in the English Premier League for Newcastle United, before moving to the United States of America and China in the twilight of his career.
His son Kevin has also followed in his footsteps. The youngster, who operates as an attacker, joined the AC Milan academy before switching to Inter Milan in 2018. He then rose through the ranks before switching to Monza.
On Saturday, Monza announced that Kevin had signed his first professional contract at the club, which will last till June 2024. Martins took to social media to share his excitement.
“Congratulations my son, I’m so proud of you. I wish you a long and successful career at Monza,” Martins wrote on his Instagram page.
Born in Italy in 2005, Kevin is eligible to play for Italy, his country of birth, and Nigeria, his father’s country.
The 18-year-old, who plays as a supporting striker, has made three appearances playing for the Italian U-15 team and has scored a goal.
