Liverpool oust Wolves 1-0 in FA Cup 3rd round replay
Defending English FA Cup champions, Liverpool, have edged out strugglers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, from the world’s oldest domestic football competition.
Only 10 days ago, the two sides had drawn 2-2 at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp’s side did enough to squeeze through away at Molineux on Tuesday evening, thanks to a first half goal from young Harvey Elliott.
The 19-year-old’s strike was a worthy game-winner, even if Wolves were often on top.
In the 14th minute, Elliott drove in from the right and sent a left-footed shot sailing beyond Wolves keeper, Jose Sa. The Portuguese goalkeeper appeared to be caught out by the effort, scrambling back as he tried in vain to get a finger to the ball.
The home side saw more of the ball and even created more chances, but, despite their persistence, and their wingers keen to get forward, they struggled to really threaten Alisson in the Liverpool goal.
As Wolves pushed for a late equaliser, Liverpool almost sealed it on the counter, but Curtis Jones’ shot from a tight angle went just wide after good work from former-Celtic youngster, Ben Doak, and matchwinner, Elliot.
Ultimately, Liverpool were able to ride out the late storm and seal the win. It wasn’t a vintage performance, but it was a good display of determination and teamwork.
In the fourth round of the FA Cup, Liverpool will play away to Brighton, where they lost 3-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.
The tie will be played on January 29.
