Artificial Intelligence experts, industry executives including Elon Musk are calling for at least a 6 months pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI’s newly launched GPT-4.
The call made in an open letter is hinged on concerns of risks such initiative poses to the society and humanity.
“AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research and acknowledged by top AI labs”, an excerpt from the letter reads.
With over 1,124 signatures to the document, the letter has also questioned the credibility of information developed by AI.
“Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones?
Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?”, another portion read.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI unveiled the fourth iteration of its GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) AI program, which thrilled users with its gamut of applications.
GPT-4 offers services from engaging users in human-like conversation to composing songs and summarising lengthy documents.
